Vanessa Altmann Young Gun of Wine 2017 Finalist

Vanessa Altmann
Young Gun of Wine 2017 Finalist

While 2017 drew to a close, Vanessa invited us to visit her new digs in the small township of Nairne in the Adelaide Hills. At the back of a seemingly forgotten timber yard sat a modest tin shed, echoing with the sweet sounds of 'Fat Freddy's Drop'.

With open arms, Vanessa came to greet us with some heat beating, thirst quenching plonk before showing us around.

Although still in the process of moving, the new space was clearly becoming the mind map and creative space for the ex-Temple Bruer full timer. Leaving behind an almost 15 year tenure at the Fleurieu winery, she now aspires to work only for herself with complete autonomy, without boundary.

“When you work for a larger company you have to fit the mould of what they’re expecting, and what the customers are expecting of that brand. I wanted to do my own thing and make my own little batches.”

Altmann’s small-scale wines are no-fuss, unrestricted and fun as hell. Take the Bel Vino Nino Nino pinot for example, wrapped in a bright label depicting a spacescape and rocket, and masterly named by her then-four-year-old daughter.

2017 ~ BEL VINO NINO NINO - Certified organic approx 1500 bottles produced. After selling out too darn fast last year, the Bel Vino Nino Nino is back and as bright as ever... Flavours of cherry, raspberry and wild violets lifted with an undercurrent of coffee and drying tobacco leaves. The palate flows with flavours of cherry and forest berries directed by tight acidity to a long finish. Whole bunches of hand-picked Eden Valley Pinot Noir sourced and handpicked from the Marneden Springs vineyard at 400m elevation on brown sandy loam with partial quartz matter. Half of the production was carbonic macerated in 200kg parcels for two weeks, the other half was made with approximately 50% whole bunch ferment and from 4 to 14 days on skins, small batch ferments and each ferment is assessed on its own merits as to when it's to pressed to barrel for a 9 month maturation period. Bottled without filtration, no finings and small doses of sulphur before closure. 40mg/L total SO2
